Dr. Dimitrios Michelogiannakis – Bio

Dr. Dimitrios Michelogiannakis serves as an Associate Professor and Program Director at the Department of Orthodontics, Eastman Institute for Oral Health (EIOH), University of Rochester, NY. He received his dental degree (DDS) from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, School of Dentistry in 2012. During his military service, he worked as a soldier-dentist in the Greek Army for one year. Afterwards, Dr. Michelogiannakis completed a 3-year specialty training program in Orthodontics and received a Master of Science degree in Dental Science (MS) in 2017 at EIOH. He has been serving as a full time academic at EIOH since then. Currently Dr. Michelogiannakis is also pursuing a PhD degree from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, School of Medicine.

Dr. Michelogiannakis is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, and a member of several dental organizations including the American Association of Orthodontists, American Dental Association, and the American Dental Education Association. He is an active member of the prestigious Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontists, North Atlantic Component. Dr. Michelogiannakis has also been appointed as Chair-Elect of the Section on Orthodontics (SOO) of the American Dental Education Association; and as a Site Visitor for Advanced Dental Education Programs in Orthodontics by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). Dr. Michelogiannakis has contributed more than 50 publications in peer-reviewed journals, which include scientific articles and book chapters. He has lectured Nationally and Internationally and serves as a Reviewer for several dental and orthodontic indexed journals. His research focuses on the influence of local and systemic factors on oral health and orthodontic treatment-related parameters, the outcomes of orthodontic treatment in patients with reduced periodontium, the inter-relationship between orthodontics, diet and body mass index, and various contemporary orthodontic treatment modalities such as mini-screw implants and clear aligners. Dr. Michelogiannakis has been awarded the Orthodontic Faculty Development Fellowship Award (OFDFA) by the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation (OFDFA) in 2020 and 2022; and the 2022-23 American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) Full Time Faculty (FFT) Fellowship award.
